ERF Newsletter December 23

Dear European rangers,

Another year is coming to an end, hopefully with a relaxing break for the vast majority of you. Recharging the batteries – that's probably especially necessary this year for those of us who don't even know whether the situation in their region will allow it. Like the family of Ohad Yahalomi, ranger of our member Israel Nature and Parks Authority, that continues to experience the worst: Since October 7, Ohad has been held captive by Hamas, his family knows nothing about his condition. We wish his family every strength and hope with all our hearts with them.

In recent weeks, we have also been thinking particularly of the children, who are most helpless in the face of war. This gave rise to the idea of calling on children of rangers and junior rangers to write letters to these children. More than 40 letters and pictures came in! From entire school classes contacted by rangers from Portugal and Germany, but also from children of ranger families in Spain. We are very sure that this is a beautiful ray of light and have sent all the beautiful pictures and letters to the two regions we are in contact with: Ukraine and Israel. Huge thanks to the children and and their adult helpers!

And there were even more bright spots in December: the closing ceremony of our "Volunteering is in my Nature" photo competition kicked off the month with the celebration of volunteering in conservation, exciting presentations by wildlife photographers and filmmakers and a lively discussion about the drive to volunteer.

We took a look at the rangers in Macedonia, who will soon have their own ranger association – and we hopefully a new member! –, and joined Kate and Charlie, two British rangers travelling the world as volunteers, on their journey in Europe working and exchanging with rangers.

Speaking of exchange: another twinning pair, the Rangers from Denmark and Finland, is presenting its twinning partnership. And our Project Officer Adam continues our series of Ranger Stories. Join us with your ranger story to show the whole picture of how rangers work for planetary health!

For now, we wish you all a wonderful end to the year with time to take a break, a wonderful Christmas for all who celebrate it, and a happy new year!

Travelling to learn from ranger to ranger

More than a year ago, the two rangers Kate & Charlie from England set off on their journey: Rangering around the world, to familiarise themselves with ranger work in as many countries as possible and bring it home with them for their own work. This is the plan that brought them to Europe's Rangers. Here they tell us what they experienced, learnt and contributed.

Rangers in Macedonia: cooperation is essential

In Macedonia, rangers are perhaps lacking a few things. But there is one thing they certainly don't lack: initiative and a great willingness for cooperation. In order to take the ranger profession to the next level, rangers around Aleksandar Gugoski have been working on their own ranger association since the European Ranger Congress in Albania. When we may welcome a new member and what it means to be a ranger in Macedonia.

Worthy conclusion to Volunteer Photo Contest

More than 30 volunteers and their groups attended our International Volunteer Day event, where we honored their work for conservation and the great photo entries for our photo competition. Hosted by our Project Officer Adam Turner, the winners were honored and presented their volunteering projects. Between two fascinating presentations by wildlife film and photography experts Dafna Ben Nun and Gary Krosnoff, the volunteers discussed what their work gives them.

Ranger twinning in the far north of Europe

Our latest profile on twinning partnerships between rangers takes us up north: Denmark's and Finland's rangers have a long-standing partnership to exchange on ranger topics such as environmental education and nature interpretation through good storytelling. Let these and other Twinnings inspire you for own projects! And write to us if your twinning is missing: press@europeanrangers.org

Ranger story: How daily ranger work delivers on planetary health goals

We continue our ranger stories: Following the three-country ranger project to protect brown bears, Adam Turner from Sweden tells us how he protects old, valuable tree populations: "This is me on patrol beside a Natura 2000 site in Hansta Nature Reserve – an ancient woodland full of old growth Oaks and Hazel trees." In his daily work, he mainly patrols to prevent illegal removal of wildlife. Habitat management is also part of his job, especially in winter, a good time to cut back overgrown forest edges and thickets to promote biodiversity and foraging for wildlife. Tell us how your ranger work adds to the health of the planet and help us make rangers heard as nature's voice!

Be part of the State of the Ranger Report: 1st global report on rangers

There is still time to take part in the State of the Ranger Report of the International Ranger Federation: As a ranger or employer of rangers, you have until the end of the year to become part of the first global report on the ranger profession. Perhaps you will find a few minutes in the quieter days between the years for the first ever report on the global state of the ranger profession, which will be published at the next 10th IRF World Ranger Congress. A little incentive: so far only 15 percent of the participants come from Europe. Air to the top to raise global awareness of the ranger profession and support its recognition as a profession by the International Labor Organization!
