ERF Newsletter August 23

Dear European rangers,

I hope you all survived the busy summer season in your areas well and had many nice encounters. Here in my area, the Black Forest National Park, I especially remember the visit of our twinning partners from Israel. Six rangers from Israel visited the rangers of Brandenburg and us.

Their visit showed me once again how important twinning partnerships between rangers from two countries are: to learn solutions and techniques from each other on how to deal with the many common challenges, despite all the differences. But also for the awareness of being part of an international ranger community that stands up for the protection of our natural treasures with the same passion. That always gives me new strength.

In order to bring even more rangers into the exchange for mutual strengthening of knowledge and resilience, we have worked on our twinning page in the last few weeks and, in addition to twinning guidelines, created the first short profiles on existing partnerships. In this way, we hope to inspire even more of you to start or to revive existing partnerships. If you have further questions or would like to talk personally about this topic, please do not hesitate to contact our Project Officer Adam: projects@europeanrangers.org

The event par excellence for exchange among rangers worldwide is the World Ranger Congress (WRC) of the International Ranger Federation. As a European ranger association, we are of course very happy for our member, the Gardes Nature de France, that they will host the 10th WRC in 2024. President Carole D'Antuoni explained to us in an interview what the status of the planning is and what hopes she has for the event.

Spain's rangers will definitely be there, too, for whom Borja Díaz reports on how they benefit from international exchange and what rangers from other countries can learn from them. In addition: Our photo competition for volunteers in the ERF region shows with new entries how diverse volunteers support conservation. You want to help us recognise the work of your volunteers? Then forward the form for participation to them!

And also in August we have sad and happy news in our own matter: Our previous secretary Artenisa Peçulaj will be replaced by Birgit Gruber, Ranger in Austria, whose cooperation in our Board makes us enormously happy. A huge thank you to Arte for all her great work for the cause of rangers!

Twinning partnerships for rangers at a glance

Knowledge sharing and resilience building through ranger partnerships is a big goal for us as the European Ranger Federation. Twinning partnerships between ranger associations of two countries are an ideal format for this. Read here how existing Twinnigs live their partnership and get inspired to follow suit.

Israeli rangers visit twinning partners

Six rangers from the Israel Nature and Parks Authority have just returned from visiting their twinning partners in Brandenburg and Black Forest National Park in Germany. Here they report on productive debates about common challenges in nature conservation.

Spain's rangers: Experts in investigating fires

Nature in Spain is as highly diverse as the tasks of the rangers who protect it. Borja Díaz, ranger and spokesperson of the Spanish Ranger Association AEAFMA, gives us an insight into their training, work and fight against ever new dimensions of forest fires - including high expertise in investigating the causes for prevention.

The work of volunteers: as diverse as valuable

Whether it's turtle conservation, environmental education, animal rescue or cleanup events: Our photo contest shows the many ways volunteers help in the ERF Region's protected areas. Check it out and send it to your volunteers as inspiration to get involved! We'd love to honor as many of your volunteers as possible.
